Yahoo News iZombie's series finale was unexpected and here's why, according to its showrunner

Regardless of fans' hopes of a resurrection, undead drama iZombie has aired its final episode, and it all tied up nicely.
Fated couple Major (Robert Buckley) and Liv (Rose McIver) reunited after Major took what the thought was the zombie cure on live TV, only to find it was a fake dose – as Ravi (Rahul Kohli) had swapped it out to inject the head zombie of the antihuman movement instead.
On top of the distinct lack of major character casualties, in a futuristic take on a podcast – a virtualcast – it's revealed that Major and Liv are living on Zombie Island with their family and invite the whole gang (Clive, Ravi, Peyton) to join them. N'aww.

So, where's the drama and the heartbreak? Fans may have expected an unhappy ending, but for showrunner Rob Thomas, this perfect finish was always what he had planned.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he explains that after dealing with the noir drama of Veronica Mars – and delivering many heartbreaking moments in that show – it felt good to give iZombie's characters an ending they deserved.
"I think you could have asked me five years ago how will the show end and I would have said that our crew will be victorious in some way, and Major and Liv will find their way back to each other," he said.
"I've always known that, hey, I'm not doing a noir show for once! Let's give them the happy ending! That much has always been in my head."
He went on to say that the happy ending element of iZombie was also an attempt to minimise "strife" in America – joking that if the whole of the US had watched his show, maybe the nation would be "healed".
"That was really what I was going for: the lessening of eternal strife in America. I don’t think we accomplished it, sadly," he admitted.
iZombie airs on The CW in the US and Netflix in the UK.
