Jameela Jamil responds to Caroline Flack over 'Love Island' diversity row

Jameela Jamil has responded to Caroline Flack amid concerns over the issue of diversity in Love Island.

Last week, Jamil - who is an active campaigner of body positivity - reacted to the announcement that plus-size model Anna Vakili would be among this year’s Love Island contestants.

The Good Place star tweeted: "The producers of Love Island think this slim woman counts as their new token “plus size” contestant? Are they drunk?"

In response, Flack, 39, accused Jamil, 33, of “always” being critical of the ITV2 reality show and questioned whether she had ever actually watched it before making her judgement.

Flack told The Sun newspaper: "She's always criticised the show.

"I wonder if she's actually watched it, because it isn't about what you see on face value."

She added: "I'm a massive fan of Jameela and what she stands for.

"Of course, people will look at things on face value and judge them, but the show is so much more than that, it really is".

On Sunday, Jamil responded again on Twitter: “Sorry Caroline, the show could stand to have some more diversity. It’s hard for slim, white, straight people to relate to this sometimes. I understand that. You can’t begin to understand erasure because you’re constantly represented. The show would be even better with diversity.”

Love Island, arguably one of ITV’s most successful shows, has been in the firing line in recent weeks. First it was accused of failing to provide full aftershow support following the suicide of two former contestants.

And people have called out bosses for not casting contestants with a range of body types.

While many Twitter users have agreed with Jamil’s initial tweet about body diversity among Love Island contestants, the actress is not shy of entering into debates on social media.

When it was reported last month that the US state of Georgia had passed a law to ban abortions once a foetal heartbeat is detected, Jamil revealed she had had a pregnancy terminated herself in the past adding it was “the best decision I ever made.”
