Jax Jones: Parents kicked me out over my DJ dream

Chart-topping DJ Jax Jones has claimed he was thrown out of his south London home because his parents disapproved of him pursuing a career in music.

The producer ended up moving into the converted garage of a family friend, and then started trying to build a name for himself.

Now 31, he has reconciled with his parents and said he has been enjoying treating them to “nice things” with the fruits of his success.

Jones — whose single I Got U with Duke Dumont was No 1 in 2014 — left home to study at Brunel University London but said his parents took away his keys.

He told A-List: “Music was a taboo subject. That was the reason I was kicked out of my house eventually. Most people come back from uni to a home, then they have the freedom to start grafting away and maybe don’t leave. But that wasn’t an option for me. Even during uni, my parents took my house keys away and that was it.

“I moved into the converted garage of a family friend, where they had put a stove and a sofa bed, and I just got busy. I would play in churches, when sometimes you’d just get paid with a meal. I had to earn my stripes. My parents disregarded music totally.”

Jones added: “I don’t think they quite understand it, but they know that I’m comfortable. They get nice things from me and they definitely like the accolades. My mum says she’s proud now.”

Jones’s single Ring Ring with Mabel, the daughter of Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey, is currently in the charts.

He is working on his debut album and hopes to release singles with Jess Glynne and Rita Ora in the future.
