Yahoo News Jesse Eisenberg To Play Legendary Mime Artist Marcel Marceau
Jesse Eisenberg will play iconic mime artist Marcel Marceau in upcoming film Resistance.
The movie won't be a typical biopic on the artist, but will instead focus on his involvement in the French resistance during World War II (via The Hollywood Reporter).
It's being compared to 1999's Oscar-winning Life is Beautiful, and will depict Marceau learning how to mime in order to survive during the Nazi occupation, and saving the lives of young Jewish orphans whose parents were murdered by the Nazis.
Marceau was born Marcel Mangel and grew up speaking Yiddish as the son of kosher butcher from Strasbourg. His father was eventually killed in Auschwitz.
He was most renowned for his stage creation Bip the Clown, and performed professionally around the world for more than 60 years. One of his first, biggest gigs was to 3,000 American troops following the liberation of Paris in August 1944.
Eisenberg was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher's The Social Network, and will appear next as Lex Luthor opposite Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot in Justice League.
The 33-year-old actor's mother Amy previously worked as a professional clown at children's parties, and being Jewish, Eisenberg grew up in a secular Jewish family that originated in Poland and the Ukraine.
Marcea's oldest son Baptiste Marceau has been closely involved in the research for the production, and will serve as executive producer.
Resistance - to be helmed by Hands of Stone director Jonathan Jakubowicz adapted from a screenplay he wrote - will begin filming in early 2018.
