An Oscar nominee is gracing the second season of Jessica Jones, as production begins.

Janet McTeer – who's previously scored two Academy Award nominations, for Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs – will have a major part to play when the Netflix superhero series returns. But what her role is remains a mystery.

So, what do we know?

We've been told that she's playing an "undisclosed character who will have an enormous impact on Jessica's life" (via Entertainment Weekly) – and that's about it. Cue the speculation.

"We are so fortunate to have an actress of Janet's talent and stature join what is already an incredible cast," Marvel TV executive Jeph Loeb said.

"Our second season of Marvel's Jessica Jones aims to capture what audiences loved about our first, and Janet will be key to achieving that goal."

Jessica Jones TV creator Melissa Rosenberg was similarly excited to have signed up McTeer for the show.

"Her gravitas and authenticity are the perfect ingredients for all we're trying to create this year," she said.

"She disappears into roles, gives her characters extraordinary dimension and depth. We're incredibly fortunate to be able to collaborate with her."

Last October, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg revealed that every episode of Jessica Jones season two will be directed by women, after initially aiming to increase the number of female directors.

We'll next see Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones in Netflix's crossover series The Defenders – and she's already keen for a second season of that as well.

Jessica Jones season two will likely launch in 2018.
