Joe Lycett brands Twitter a 'nasty place' full of trolls

Joe Lycett has branded Twitter a "nasty place".

The 33-year-old comedian loves social media and spends "too much time on it", however, he is becoming dismayed with Twitter because it is full of trolls and people attacking one another. Joe's social media platform of choice is now Instagram.

Appearing on ‘The Lovejoy Hour’ podcast, Joe - who has 938.3K followers on Twitter and 1m fans on Instagram - said: “I love social media, I spend too much time on it.

"Instagram is my favourite by far. It’s visual but also it’s celebratory. Generally, people are nice on it and nastiness is genuinely discouraged.

“I used to love Twitter. I used to find it really helpful for writing jokes, but it has become a very nasty place.

“But I find that interesting and I’m trying to deal with that in my new stand up show, kind of accepting the hate and almost engaging with it. "Trying to take it as constructive criticism. Often it isn’t. Often it’s someone trying to tell you you’re a p***k.

“But if you can approach it as if it’s constructive criticism sometimes it’s interesting what you can get out of it.”

He also gave his opinion on Facebook, claiming it’s basically now a place where "mums go to say s**t".

Along with doing stand-up comedy, Joe also presents TV shows such as BBC Two’s ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ and Channel 4’s ‘Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back’, which was recently renewed for a third season.

Although Joe is now dismayed by Twitter and much of social media, he credits the platforms for helping him become a success.

He said: "Social media has done lots of things for me. I loathe to criticise it. I’m not going to be one of those people that says it has ruined everything and we should get rid of it.

“I think there is a healthier way of being alongside social media.”
