Sunak or Mordaunt: who is backing whom as next Tory leader?

Two candidates are left in the Conservative leadership race after Boris Johnson’s announcement that he is not running. The former chancellor Rishi Sunak and the leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, both need at least 100 signatures to make it to the first round of voting on Monday.

According to the Guardian’s count of public nominations, as of 1.55pm, with just five minutes to go, Sunak had the backing of more than 195 Tory MPs, equivalent to 55% of their total number.

A dozen of those who had previously backed Boris Johnson have now publicly switched allegiance to Sunak, including the current or former cabinet ministers James Cleverly, Nadhim Zahawi and Priti Patel while Lee Anderson has also delcared for her.

Two Johnson supporters, Michael Fabricant and Giles Watling, have switched to Penny Mordaunt, however, one former Mordaunt backer, Michael Freeman, has since declared for Sunak giving her a total of 27 (including her own nomination), but her camp claims she has more than 90 backers including those who have not declared publicly.
