Kelly Macdonald has spoken out about all the attention when she appeared on Line Of Duty, saying she dealt with it “badly”.

The Trainspotting star, 46, played troubled DCI Jo Davidson in the sixth series of the BBC crime drama, and said it would take her a long time to process it.

She told Bustle: “It was a very strange time for me because I’d never been so exposed. I had to stop going online.”

Macdonald said she discovered that everyone was very invested in the series – which also stars Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar and Martin Compston – and that she found it “overwhelming”.

The actor said when she landed her part, Dunbar did warn her about how much the cast were in the spotlight and that she had thought she was prepared.

Discussing how she would “need years” to process the experience, she said: “I need to look back at it from a distance. I find it hard to know how I feel about it all.”

The sixth series of Line Of Duty aired last year and there has been much speculation about whether it will return for another run.

McClure – who is best known for playing DI Kate Fleming – was quizzed about it on This Morning in January and hinted that it would be back.

Host Phillip Schofield asked the actor whether she would be on board if creator Jed Mercurio had an idea and the script was there, and she said she would.

"It would be weird if the day does come that we may never go again," she said.
