Mindhunter's Anna Torv has joined the cast of HBO's eagerly anticipated The Last of Us TV series.

Based on Naughty Dog's popular PlayStation game of the same name, the upcoming horror drama – which is currently filming in Canada – will centre on Joel Miller, a cynical and hardened apocalypse survivor who is tasked with ferrying Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who potentially holds the secret to killing off the outbreak's virus, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

During the pair's journey across a desolate US, the prickly pair start to develop an unlikely bond as they find themselves facing off against both infected creatures and human enemies.

The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal is set to play Joel, while Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey has been tasked with bringing Ellie to life. Torv, who is also known for her work in sci-fi hit Fringe, is on board as Tess, Joel's smuggling partner who meets a tragic (albeit heroic) end fairly early on in the game.

Whether the show will follow the source material closely in that regard remains to be seen.

Terminator: Dark Fate actor Gabriel Luna and Dumbo's Parker will portray Joel's brother Tommy and Tommy's ill-fated daughter Sarah, respectively. Jeffrey Pierce (who voiced Tommy in the game), Con O'Neill, Murray Bartlett and Merle Dandridge – reprising the role of Fireflies leader and resistance fighter Marlene – round out the cast.

It's expected that more players will be announced in the coming weeks, particularly when it comes to characters such as Ellie's love interest Riley and Tommy's partner Maria.

Chernobyl's Craig Mazin and the game's creator Neil Druckmann wrote the series and will act as executive producers alongside Game of Thrones' Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog's Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The first episode will be directed by Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov.

The Last of Us does not currently have a release date.
