Stars have descended upon the O2 Arena’s red carpet, making their way to a new-and-improved BRIT Awards. Gender categories have been dropped for the first time leaving coveted titles like ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop/R&B Act’ twice as tough to secure. And unlike awards ceremonies of old, tonight has shown gender is no longer a barrier for those wanting to turn looks for the camera.

As expected, this year’s hosts were quick to appear. Long-time BRITs presenter Jack Whitehall has been replaced for 2022 by comedian Mo Gillian, who cut a dapper shape in his traditional tuxedo and bow tie. He will be joined on screen by Maya Jama, who committed to ultra-glam in a black zig-zag sliced skirt and bralet combo, complete with floor length faux stole and bling-heavy diamond Bulgari earrings, as well as Clara Amfo, who opted for a ruched, yellow satin mini. All three will be in action on ITV at 8pm.

Those performing during the night also made early entrances. Ed Sheeran, one of 2022’s leading artists counting four BRIT nominations, was unmissable in an electric blue velvet suit, white shirt and tie, while Rising Star award winner Holly Humberstone stepped away from her usual grungy aesthetic by donning a vampy black lace dress by Gucci, with their statement slip-on feather arm warmers. Later came Adele, who looked the picture of sophistication in her floor length, long sleeve black gown with a sharp plunge covered in spotted tulle.

New designs by ascending design talent Casey Cadwallader, creative director of Mugler, made a splash thanks to the sheer catsuits and cut out dresses that have been a mainstay on his runways. Ex-Pussycat Doll Ashely Roberts put her best foot forward in one of his most revealing – all thigh high slits and intricate upper body panels, with bicep-high leather opera gloves. Matching her all-out look was Italian band Måneskin, who won 2021’s Eurovision Song Contest, and played their part in latex trousers, dusty pink cropped tailoring and purple tinsel jackets.

Others kept it cool by playing down. Little Simz, who also boasts four nominations, went Matrix mode in a distressed, leather overcoat, green button up shirt and mirrored shades. Meanwhile the Glass Animals boys rocked the twee trend in an endearing bundle of argyle pattern cardigans and peach embroidered pullovers.
