Les Dennis says he has been receiving abuse on social media ever since he tweeted about Matt Hancock in I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here.

The comedian has been critical of the former health secretary's decision to appear on the ITV game show after the MP resigned in disgrace for breaking his own social distancing guidelines to have an affair with his aide.

Alongside eventual winner Jill Scott and Owen Warner, Hancock made it to the show's final, leading Dennis to tweet: "I’ve just finished watching tonight’s I’m A Celebrity.

While many of Dennis' followers agreed with him, some also objected to what he was saying.

Dennis then proceeded to address his critics on Twitter: "I’ve had a lot of abuse re my post about #imaceleb Lots of people calling me a has been and an ex celebrity. Like me those people are entitled to their opinions."

He added: "I try not to criticise here and I considered deleting the tweet but I stand by it. I won’t be posting about the final."

Among those to support Dennis was former Pointless host Richard Osman who tweeted: "Les, you’re the best."

After deciding to join I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, Hancock was suspended from the Conservative Party and is currently sitting as an independent MP until he decides if he wants to compete in the next election which will likely take place in 2024.

Hancock was criticised by party leader and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his decision to step away from his constituents for his 18 day stint in Australia.

Sunak's spokesperson said: "The PM believes that at a challenging time for the country MPs should be working hard for their constituents, whether that is in the House or in their constituency."
