It was the question on all our lips after watching Line of Duty's storming series 4 finale... is Ted Hastings a nice fella, or a bent copper?

Corrupt officer ACC Hilton (Paul Higgins) was apparently revealed to be the criminal mastermind known only as 'H' – but some fans have speculated that it might actually be AC-12 boss Ted (Adrian Dunbar) pulling the strings.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, series creator and writer Jed Mercurio confirmed that the "ambiguity" surrounding H's identity is very much intentional.

"The fact that Hilton is a very good fit for 'H' – and [corrupt cop] Dot Cottan would know that he was 'H' – is something that is consistent with the series as it has gone before," Mercurio said.

"But the fact that there could be a suspicion that Hastings is 'H' is something that we want to exploit dramatically going forward."

But Ted's not the only potential suspect. DCS Lester Hargreaves – an antagonist from series two, played by Tony Pitts, also just happened to reappear in series four's finale.

"His name begins with 'H' as well – it was something that we were aware of!" Mercurio chuckled.

One thing's for sure, we're going to be in for a long wait before we find out the truth about 'H' – with the next series of Line of Duty potentially not airing on BBC One till 2019.

"We're not due to film the series till next year," Mercurio explained. "So therefore, depending on what time it's delivered, it might not be on the air till 2019.

"But that's just purely to do with the production schedule, and the post-production schedule, and we don't what that is, because it hasn't been nailed down yet."
