Lost In Space season 2: everything you need to know

The Netflix reimagining of '60s classic Lost In Space was unleashed on the world back in April 2018. (Read our spoiler-free review of season one here.)

And the good news is that the adventures of the Robinsons are set to continue past the first ten-episode season, which isn't the gritty reboot some were fearing.

Still, season one received some mixed reviews, so there's a lot riding on the show's next ten episodes.

Will they deliver or will this end up being the last time we see the Robinson family on screen? Here's everything you need to know about Lost in Space season two on Netflix.

Lost In Space season two release date: When will it air?

Filming on the show's second season began back in September last year in Vancouver, according to Omega Underground, and would continue until March 1 this year. Filming on the first season took around seven months (and then there's post-production, including the impressive CG work, which adds another few months), so a hefty wait was to be expected.

Netflix officially announced the second season on May 14, 2018 (one month and one day after the launch of the first).

However, it wasn't until the first week of October, 2019, that we finally learned season two's official release date. Prepare yourselves for a festive treat, because the second batch of Lost In Space episodes will now fly down our collective chimney on December 24, 2019. Don't get too excited bingeing the whole lot though or you might struggle to wake up on Christmas Day.

Lost In Space season two cast: Who's in it?

With all the main cast surviving – just – to continue their exploits, it looks like the Robinson family will be on their own as their ship, the Jupiter 2, has been taken way off course to an unknown destination (more on that below).

Returning will be parents Maureen and John, played by Molly Parker and Toby Stephens respectively. Parker told Digital Spy that, due to the physical demands of filming Lost In Space, she's "gonna go to the gym" before filming starts again.

And, of course, there are the Robinson kids, Judy, Will and Penny: Taylor Russell, Maxwell Jenkins and Mina Sundwall should all be back for more perilous japes and teen angst. They spoke to Digital Spy about the updating of gender roles for the new show in comparison to the original '60s incarnation.

Sundwall recently shared some behind the scenes green-screen action on Twitter showing the cast hard at work.

During an interview with Fangirlish, Sundwall spoke about the challenges of acting with a green screen.

"You have to imagine you're in a world you've never seen before because it doesn't exist because it hasn't been made yet," she said. "It's an entirely different way of acting."

But it also gives the show's stars room to experiment and have fun with their roles – because, as Sundwall added: "you aren't limited in your acting by your environment".

Jenkins also told the publication that initially, he found the idea of a green screen intimidating.

"I talked to Parker Posey about it after the first day, because I was completely overwhelmed because we were doing all green screens," he said. "She told me from her experience in doing Superman that it helps if you play pretend. Just be Will Robinson."

He also chatted about the robot and the many different forms it can take during filming.

"Sometimes it [the robot] was a guy in a suit, and he was such a gifted performer that he really made the robot seem like a real person," he said.

"There was this one scene where I was up in a tree and I'm having a conversation with the giant killer robot. But it was really a tennis ball on a stick. There I was – having to spill my guts to a tennis ball."

Sibongile Mlambo, who played Angela in the debut season, will also be promoted to a series regular. (Mlambo featured in just five episodes during season one.)

In the shady past corner, there's Dr Smith (well, she's actually June Harris) and smuggling rogue Don West so you can fully expect to see the brilliant Parker Posey and Ignacio Serricchio up to no good once more. The former was left imprisoned by Maureen on their ship but we're sure she'll be out before long.

Now separated from Earth ship The Resolute, it's not known if we'll see what the crew of the other Jupiter spaceships are up to. But we wouldn't be surprised to see the politician who likes to take charge Victor Dhar (Raza Jaffrey) return with his son Vijay (Ajay Friese), who has struck up a Romeo and Juliet-style relationship with Penny Robinson.

We might also see more cameos from the cast of the original '60s Lost in Space, after Bill Mumy's appearance in season one. Executive producer Matt Sazama has said he'd "love to include them", while Maxwell Jenkins, who plays Will, is backing the idea, too.

"It would be amazing to see that," he told Digital Spy.

According to That Hashtag Show, there are also going to be two new characters in the second season. One is reportedly called Ava, between her late 20s and 40s, and is the supervisor of the mechanics. She is described as "firm, hardworking, and serious" and "shuts down Don's nonsense but respects his skill".

Then there's Commander Jiang, the Captain of the Resolute, who is described as "capable, stalwart, and unsentimental".

On top of that, it was announced at NYCC 2019 that JJ Feild will join the show as an AI expert. Fans will probably remember him best for roles in Third Star and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Lost In Space season two plot: What's going to happen?

Season one ended on an epic cliffhanger as, just when you thought that the Robinsons were safe (for the first time all season!) and reunited with their fellow colonists on The Resolute, the gang were mysteriously zapped away (we assume because of the alien engine) from the planet they never bothered to name.

According to Will, where they find themselves is connected with a drawing by his Robot – perhaps this is what we're calling the 'Planet of the Robots'. Undoubtedly this will form the basis of the next season.

We're also sure to find out just why the human colonists had been using (unknown to the majority) this stolen alien tech. Cue more flashbacks to nefarious deals and reasons as to why the Robots are dealing with humanity.

The Resolute's original destination was Alpha Centauri, where the future of mankind lay. Will Victor and his colonists continue on this journey or try to reconnect with the Robinsons on their Jupiter?

Speaking about what fans can expect, Jenkins told PopCulture.com: "It's going to be much bigger than the first season. It's going to be awesome."

Stephens added: "What's great is that the creators, they kind of started this whole story. And, they sat back… they looked at season one, saw it, just saw what could be improved upon, and they did without it becoming kind of just spending loads more money on it. Or, throwing more special effects at it."

And if that wasn't enough to get you in the mood, Molly Parker's high praise should set your pulses racing.

"I mean it really, truly, I'm so pleased with it on every level," she said. "I think this season is deeper and richer and just... it really is going to be very good I think."

Jenkins and Sundwall also told Fangirlish what lies in store in the new chapter.

"It's going to be bigger, with new storylines for these characters," said Jenkins.

Sundwall added: "It's going to be bigger, larger and a little scarier," she said. "There will be more questions and more answers."

Lost In Space season two trailer: When can we expect it?

Following the events of season one, the Robinson Family can be seen hunting for the Robot in the first season two trailer, which also hints that the story will focus more on the character's relationship with Will. Check out the clip in full above.

While the song 'What a Wonderful World' plays in the background, we're also provided a few glimpses of characters like, Dr Smith, Don West and Maureen Robinson exploring the new ocean planet they're stranded on.

Lost In Space season two: Will the Robot be back?

As we saw in season finale, the Robot was involved in quite a big battle with another of its kind and seemed to meet its end in the midst of space. Bad news for all of you with a crush on the "sexy" droid.

But, we've already seen it "die" once before, and during his interview with PopCulture.com, Jenkins said: "Those who saw the first season will remember that Will's bond with the robot came to a despairing end when he had it walk off a cliff after accidentally injuring his father.

"As far as plot lines go I can't tell you much, but Will and the robot are not over, and it is definitely… where we are is definitely danger."

So we're expecting lots of Robot action, and maybe even some flashbacks with Robots meeting humans for the first time.

One of the Lost in Space showrunners Burk Sharpless has also revealed that the reasons why the robot saved Will Robinson in the finale, despite being linked to Dr Smith at the time, will feature next season as "an ongoing story".
