Love Island is returning for a 2021 series, ITV has confirmed.

The ITV2 dating show's summer series was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic along with a planned winter edition set to air earlier this year.

The broadcaster has said the seventh series of the popular programme will go ahead later this year, but did not detail where it would be filmed.

Announcing the spring schedule, director of television at ITV Kevin Lygo said: “There’s so much to look forward to

on ITV this spring and into summer, with the Euros and the return of Love Island, but much more besides.

“Brilliant drama production teams have worked in the most challenging production conditions to bring these very different but equally strong series to air.”

Laura Whitmore, who hosted the winter 2020 instalment, is due to front the upcoming series.

The 35-year-old said last month that she had been told the programme was returning and that the number of applications were "crazy".

It comes following the death of the show's original presenter Caroline Flack in February last year after the TV host took her own life at the age of 40.

Episodes of the programme were pulled from the TV schedule following her death, but the series later resumed.

The show marked the anniversary of her death earlier this year, saying she is “always in our hearts”.
