Marvel star Robert Downey Jr's new TV series Perry Mason unveils first full trailer

Marvel star Robert Downey Jr's new TV series Perry Mason has released a first full trailer, giving us a proper look at the reimagined criminal defence lawyer.

The Avengers: Endgame actor and his wife Susan Downey are executive producing the new HBO show, which stars Matthew Rhys in the title role.

The character of Perry Mason first appeared in short stories and novels written by Erle Stanley Gardner, and later became an iconic TV series in 1957. The new series has been in production since 2016, with Downey Jr originally tipped for the main role.

Now, we've been given our first proper look at the latest adaptation, teasing a mysterious kidnapping case and a whole lot of corruption.

The official series description from HBO reads: "Set in 1932 Los Angeles, the series will focus on the origin story of famed defence lawyer Perry Mason, based on characters from Erle Stanley Gardner's novels.

"Living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator, Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffering the effects of a broken marriage.

"LA is booming while the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression – but a kidnapping gone very wrong leads to Mason exposing a fractured city as he uncovers the truth of the crime."

Alongside Rhys, the new series also stars John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Chris Chalk, Juliet Rylance, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Shea Whigham, Andrew Howard, Jefferson Mays, Robert Patrick, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Lili Taylor and Justin Kirk.

Perry Mason premieres on HBO on June 21 at 9pm.
