Marvel's Cloak & Dagger stars respond after series is cancelled by Freeform
Marvel TV shows have faced a difficult year of cancellations, and now another series has fallen victim to the long axe list that already includes the likes of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger has officially been cancelled by network Freeform after two seasons, reports Deadline.
Cloak & Dagger, which followed teenagers Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) after they acquire mysterious superpowers and find that they are somehow linked to one another, debuted in 2018.
It was soon renewed for a second season, but ratings declined over the superhero show's second run, with Freeform confirming that the show wouldn't be returning for a third season in a statement.
"We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision," the statement read.
"We'd like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together."
Since the cancellation was confirmed on Friday, the show's stars have both responded to the news, with Olivia Holt sharing a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.
Posting a photo of herself with co-star Aubrey Joseph, the actress admitted that Cloak & Dagger was "more than just a job" for her.
"Hooo boy. this one hurts," she wrote. "I'm not sure if I will ever really be able to articulate what I'm feeling right now. but one thing I know for sure, is just how f**king proud I am of this show. And what this show did. And what this show said.
"This show was more than just a job for me. It changed my life, professionally and personally. It helped shape me into the human I am today. It taught me bravery and camaraderie, it was intelligent and raw. And even though it was a show about superheroes, it was real."

She continued to praise the show for tackling "some of the heaviest issues that are happening in our world today", including drug addiction, sexual assault, police brutality and human trafficking.
"We decided to tell a story through the eyes of a young black man and a young white woman living in modern day New Orleans recognising just how much society has dehumanised black culture and minimised females," she added.
"Cloak and dagger are super humans. and what an absolute honour it was to bring Tandy to life."
Aubrey shared his own tribute to the show on Instagram too, writing: "Cloak & Dagger was probably the best thing that's ever happened to me in the past few years [...] This was destiny for us @olivia_holt.
"What we created has resonated with so many of you all over the world. That's why I am able to walk away from this at peace knowing we did our part.
"I got the 1 in a billion chance to say I was a marvel superhero, but also the chance to be on one of the most grounded shows on air."
He also thanked "the hardest working cast & crew in the whole mf business" and credited them with changing his life, saying: "Thank you for taking a chance on a kid like me. You made my life long dream come true. You will forever be a huge part of my life."

But despite the cancellation, this isn't the end of Tandy and Tyrone's story just yet, as the characters will be seen again in a crossover episode of Runaways later this year.
Marvel's Cloak and Dagger teased a potential crossover in its second season finale when Tyrone and Tandy hopped on a bus out of New Orleans, and it was later confirmed that they'll be heading to Los Angeles, as the Runaways prepare to face their "toughest challenge" yet.
Marvel's Runaways returns to Hulu in the US on December 13 while Syfy airs the show in the UK. Marvel's Cloak and Dagger aired on Freeform in the US, and on Amazon Prime in the UK.
