The Masked Singer US has finally revealed the identity of the mystery vocalist in the astronaut costume.

In Wednesday night's episode (April 29), the judges couldn't contain their excitement when the bronzed spaceman turned out to be... country music singer Hunter Hayes.

"It's been out of this world," Hunter joked, when host Nick Cannon asked him whether he'd enjoyed being a part of the competition.

"It's been an unbelievable experience. This time in my life is a great chance for me to hit the reset button and to try a bunch of things that I was scared of.

"This show is full of those," he laughed. "I've never danced properly before. I've never worked on choreo. Trying new songs, trying new things with my voice? It's been incredible."

After he performed One Direction's 'Story of my Life' on what turned out to be his final episode, Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger guessed who Astronaut was correctly. After it was revealed to be Hunter, she told him: "You've been my personal favourite on the show so far.

"Week after week, you've worn your heart on your sleeve. You've had this beautiful spirit and energy behind you and I'm so excited for the world to see this new restart for you."

Throughout his time on the show, clues that tried to help judges and viewers figure his identity out saw hints to the Orion constellation, which means 'Hunter'; getting help from the mob, which was a nod to The Godfather star Robert Duvall, who gave Hunter his first guitar; and 'bridge', which was a secret reference to Hunter's hometown, Breaux Bridge in Louisiana.

Other famous faces that have been eliminated this season include actor Bella Thorne, skateboarding pro Tony Hawk, YouTube star JoJo Siwa, singing legend Dionne Warwick and rapper Lil Wayne.

The Masked Singer US continues on May 6 at 8pm on Fox. Its UK equivalent airs on ITV.
