McFly have signed their first new record deal in 10 years, with singer Tom Fletcher confirming that new music from the band is officially on the way.

The group confirmed today (July 2) that they have signed a new deal with BMG in their first record deal since 2009.

The news comes nearly seven years after McFly released their last single as a four-piece, having put their own music on hold to join together as supergroup McBusted with Busted members James Bourne and Matt Willis between 2013 and 2015.

"We have some big @mcflymusic news!" Tom tweeted. "We have signed a new record deal with @BMGuk and new music is on the way."

After taking some time out, McFly reunited last year and performed a sold-out show at London's O2 arena in November, with plans to go on tour this year.

While the tour has since been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, McFly fans will be relieved to hear that new music is on the way, with a new album expected later this year.

It's been nearly 10 years since the release of McFly's last studio album, Above the Noise, which was released in 2010. Last year, the group released one song a week from their shelved sixth studio album, now-titled The Lost Songs, in the build-up to their show at the O2.

Speaking to the BBC, Tom admitted that there had been "a strong possibility McFly would never happen again" at one point.

"We genuinely didn't know how to get back on track," he added.

Thankfully, after playing their reunion show and feeling re-energised, the group booked a recording studio to write new music together earlier this year, and Danny explained that this upcoming album is the first time it felt like the whole band had "all been part" of creating the record.

"We were all involved, split down the middle, and it was just such a collaborative, energetic process," he said, while Dougie Poynter also shared that the band's new album was inspired by the '90s Britpop style of music.

"There was something special about Britpop back in the day," Dougie explained. "There were no boundaries and that's what we wanted – to go off in different directions depending on what we were feeling that day."

And it seems we could be hearing new music from the band sooner than expected, with a new single – described as having a "festival vibe" – expected to land later this month too.

"There's that hands-in-the-air feeling about it, like when you're drunk or you're having a barbecue," Danny teased.

"You can put it on and your kids will dance to it, your wife will dance to it, your granddad, everybody. Even the lads can get involved, the football crowd. I could really hear it on the Fifa soundtrack."
