Yahoo News McFly's Dougie Poynter was at 'lethal dosage of valium' to cope with band's hiatus
Dougie Poynter has opened up about his substance abuse following McFly's break-up.
The bassist has previously overcome substance abuse, and after suggesting the band took a hiatus, he found himself struggling again and relapsed.
"On the one hand I felt inspired because friends in LA would take me to see other bands and stuff," he said in upcoming documentary McFly: All About Us.
"On the other hand, I was like, 'But my band's broken and it's all my fault'. Valium was a way of just making all that disappear."
The Voice Kids coach Danny Jones spoke about how he noticed something was wrong with his bandmate.
"He went from being quite sketchy to being super chill, like almost dribbling, and I was like, 'There's something wrong man'," he said.
Strictly Come Dancing winner Harry Judd added: "I said to him, 'Don't freak out mate, but I know you're taking something. Is everything okay?'
"And he sort of told me what he'd been taking. He was like, at that lethal dosage."
Tom Fletcher added: "Doug’s parents had split and he moved in with the band at 15.
"We’re all he had to cling on to when there were tough things going on in his life."
After 10 years together, McFly paired up with Busted members Matt Willis and James Bourne to form McBusted.
But they admitted the supergroup caused issues in their own band.
"There is, and always has been, even at the time, a deep love for one another and a bond that we thought was unbreakable," Harry said.
"It was a weird time. After McBusted it was like, 'Shit, this isn't going to happen'. Then it was three years in the wilderness."
Tom continued: "It is like a marriage and it was almost like we had an affair. We got through that, we had marriage counselling, we've been seeing other people for a while but we didn't get divorced."
McFly: All About Us airs on ITV on Saturday (November 14) at 6.40pm.
