Meghan says she's had worse press treatment than Duchess of Cambridge – 'Waity Katie is not the same as racist'

Meghan Markle says she has received worse treatment from the UK media than the Duchess of Cambridge.

In a new clip from her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex said being dubbed "Waity Katie" was not the same as being the victim of racism.

Comparing her experience dealing with the press with Kate Middleton’s, Meghan said: “Rude and racist are not the same.”

She said the Royal Family's press team had not defended her in the same way they had done for Kate.

Meghan made her remarks in new footage that wasn't part of the original two-hour interview broadcast on US television early on Monday.

In the interview, which will air on ITV on Monday evening, Meghan revealed there were times when she “didn’t want to be alive any more” because of the pressures of life within the Royal Family.

She said at one point an unnamed royal asked Harry “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be.

On Monday, Winfrey told CBS This Morning that Harry told her neither the Queen nor Prince Philip made the remark.

Harry said he felt “let down” by his father the Prince of Wales, saying Charles stopped taking his calls after the couple’s decision to step back from royal duties. Harry also said he and his brother William “were on different paths”.

The couple also revealed that they are expecting a baby girl.

The opposing reactions to the couple's interview from media in the UK and the US was noticeable, with most commentators stateside supporting the Sussexes, while many British outlets criticised them over their TV appearance.

In a new clip from the interview released by CBS This Morning on Monday, Meghan said: “Kate was called ‘Waity Katie’ waiting to marry William.

"While I imagine that was really hard – and I do, I can’t picture what that felt like – this is not the same.

“And if a member of his family would comfortably say, ‘We’ve all had to deal with things that are rude’, rude and racist are not the same.

“And equally you’ve also had a press team that goes on the record to defend you, especially when they know something’s not true, and that didn’t happen for us.”

In the main interview, Meghan said Kate had made her cry ahead of her wedding, after reports had suggested it was the other way round.

In another new clip, Harry spoke about the “toxic environment” he said was created by the British tabloids.

He said he will “always be there” for his brother, adding: “And I will always be there for my family and as I’ve said I’ve tried to help them to see what has happened.”

Asked by Winfrey if his father thinks it is a “toxic environment”, Harry said: “I think he’s had to make peace with it.”

Asked why they could not make peace with it, Meghan said “this was different” because of social media, describing it as “like the wild, wild West”.
