Rail union boss Mick Lynch joins 'Have I Got News For You' panel

Transport union boss Mick Lynch is set to appear on the panel of Have I Got News For You.

Lynch, leader of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), will be one of the guest panellists for the BBC One comedy show on 23 September.

Have I Got News For You welcomes two guest players each episode to join team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, with a different guest host each time, too.

In the episode that Lynch is signed up to, he will appear alongside comedian Roisin Conaty as the other guest player, with Richard Ayoade hosting.

Lynch has made many a TV appearance recently while representing his union members in the rail strikes this year and over the summer clashed with Richard Madeley in a live Good Morning Britain interview.

Madeley began the interview by confronting Lynch with claims he was a Marxist and asking whether it was true.

But Lynch replied: "Richard, you do come up with the most remarkable twaddle sometimes, I've got to say – opening an interview with that is nonsense."

The show, currently in its 64th series, began this run on Friday with a special episode titled Have I Got News For Boris – A Special Tribute, which included montages of the outgoing prime minister's many appearances on the panel show previously and his most ridiculous political moments.

Ayoade will host the panel show for the ninth time when he welcomes Lynch for his debut.

Angus Deayton originally hosted the show from its debut in 1990 until 2002, when he was sacked following a series of tabloid revelations about drug use and hiring prostitutes.

Since his departure, there has been no permanent replacement for him, with a series of guest presenters taking on the role.

Johnson has been the guest presenter four times, although he last appeared in 2006.

Other notable hosts over the years have included Danny Dyer, Sir Patrick Stewart, Charlotte Church and Sir Roger Moore.

Pointless host Alexander Armstrong has the most episodes to his name as guest host with 37, while comedian Jo Brand is on 27 episodes.

Only Connect's Victoria Coren Mitchell has hosted 16 times and her husband, comedian David Mitchell, has hosted 13 times.
