Mick Schumacher said he was proud to bring an iconic name back into Formula One at his Haas team’s car launch for the 2021 season on Thursday.

The son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will make his F1 debut at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix later this month.

And the 21-year-old said: “I have never said that carrying the family name is pressure, and I am pretty sure I will never say that because I am very happy to carry that name back into Formula One.

“I am very proud of it. It is a boost for me and it gives me motivation every single day to work as much as I can and work as hard as I can.

“I will try to improve in every aspect – that is what I want to do – and I will work my a**e off for that and give everything I have.”

The Schumacher name is back on the grid for the first time in nine years after his father retired following a second stint in the sport with Mercedes.

Schumacher Jr has shown an impressive pedigree in the sport’s feeder series, capped by winning the Formula 2 Championship.

He is currently on Ferrari’s books and tipped for a future move to the team where his father dominated the sport, but has been given his initial F1 chance with Haas.

And ahead of his Bahrain opener, he said: “The first Bahrain race took place in 2004 and my father won so I definitely have good memories of that.

“There is a corridor which runs to the track that is filled with photographs and memories. My dad is on there, which is nice to see and very special.”
