Murder arrest after man chased down street and killed with axe

A man has died after he was chased down the street and attacked by an assailant wielding an axe.

The 36-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident in Partington, Greater Manchester.

Shortly before the attack on Thursday night, the offender is believed to have caused significant damage to a number of parked cars in Moss Lane.

The attacker later rang the police to report the incident before he fled the scene, Greater Manchester Police said.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Kelly said: "This a shocking incident in which a man has sadly lost his life.

"Our thoughts remain with his family, who are being supported by specialist officers at this incredibly distressing time.

"I would like to reassure the public that this is being treated as an isolated incident, and we have an increased police presence in the Partington area as we piece together the exact circumstances of what happened."
