NCIS has dropped a massive hint about Special Agent Ziva David's fate in a surprising reveal.

In season 16 episode 'She', the team investigate the case of a malnourished 9-year-old girl, Lily, found hiding in a storage unit.

The mystery leads them to re-open an old missing persons case that involved the lost daughter of a Navy recruit, Morgan Burke.

Lily is believed to be the daughter of Burke, and while examining her case file in the archives, Agent Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) discovers that Ziva (Cote de Pablo) had previously been pursuing it.

"For whatever reason, Ziva wanted to keep this thing a secret and I'm gonna honour that," Bishop tells Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama).

Torres tells Bishop it's a bad idea not to tell Gibbs (Mark Harmon) or McGee (Sean Murray) what she learned, despite Ziva's desire to keep her investigation private.

Bishop goes to Ziva's secret safe house, where she discovers journals documenting cases she'd worked on.

Bishop is determined to see it through and shows Gibbs a page from Ziva's journal containing a letter that the kidnapping victim's mother had dictated to her before dying of cancer.

Ziva had made a pledge that she would show this letter to the kidnapper or kidnappers – once she'd found whoever was responsible.

When the perpetrator was caught, however, and Bishop went to read the letter, he told her that "somebody already came here and read it to me". The same person promised to "haunt [his] dreams". Intriguing...

Returning to Ziva’s secret office, Bishop sees that a coat that had been on a hook was moved, and found a scarf on the desk with a note underneath it, which read:

"Eleanor Bishop, For the safety of my family, Please keep my secret."

NCIS airs on CBS in the US, and on FOX UK in the UK.
