Maria Bello has discussed the importance of being on "equal footing" with her NCIS co-star Mark Harmon.

The actress joined the crime drama as Special Agent Jack Sloane in 2017 and speaking recently to Digital Spy and other news outlets, Maria revealed that it was her character's "position of power and respect" that convinced her to join the cast.

"What I really liked about Jack Sloane was that she was on equal footing with Gibbs, that she didn't work for him, he doesn't work for her," Maria said.

"So, they really are colleagues and respect each other a lot and you'll see over the next few seasons how our relationship deepens and we become better friends."

Elaborating on the prospect of her character being on an "equal footing" with Gibbs, Maria added: "For me, especially the age I am and being a woman, I wanted to make sure that I portrayed a character who was in a position of power and respect."

The next season of NCIS follows the previously-teased but equally still shocking reveal in the season 16 finale that Ziva (Cote de Pablo) is still alive.
