Neil Morrissey thinks 'Men Behaving Badly' wouldn't be 'woke' enough today

Neil Morrissey has said he'd like Men Behaving Badly to be brought back but doesn't think it's 'woke' enough.

The sitcom about London flatmates and their hunt for women was a huge hit when it aired from 1992 and 1998.

But the actor, 59, said he wasn't sure it would work in the current climate.

Speaking on The Convex Conversation podcast, he said: "With everything we do, it's all about the script. If Simon (creator and writer Simon Nye) writes something marvellous... we would obviously have a look at it.

"I don’t know whether we could make that programme again now, though. It’s not woke enough is it?"

Morrissey, who co-starred with Martin Clunes, Leslie Ash and Caroline Quentin in the comedy, went on: "Putting ladies’ underpants on my head and things like that.

"And the way that I guess that Leslie was kind of objectified a little bit by my character.

"But that was the point of it – that we were really rubbish, and they were really cool and really smart. And so that was the premise of the programme, that we were a couple of misogynist idiots who couldn't even keep a job let alone a girlfriend."

"I don’t know if it would work," he added. "It would be fun trying!"

The star said the way to do it "would be to have the wokeness involved in it".

Suggesting what his character Tony Smart could be like, he said: "Tony has become completely woke and will not do anything wrong and is so PC, you know, that it’s unbelievable.

“They’ll just have to have lapses after several beers on the sofa in front of the telly.”

Men Behaving Badly started in 1992 and ran for six series.

There have also been specials and three final episodes that made up the feature-length Last Orders instalment.
