Outnumbered star Hugh Dennis says he would be "very happy" for the sitcom to return - but he'd be keen to see a version where the youngsters are now much older.

From 2007 to 2016, the actor and his real-life partner Claire Skinner brought stressed-out history teacher Pete and part-time personal assistant Sue Brockman to life, as they juggled their respective jobs and raising three somewhat unruly children.

Daniel Roche, Ramona Marquez and Tyger Drew-Honey rounded out the main cast.

"I really liked making it," Dennis recently told Radio Times when asked whether the show would ever make a comeback. "Maybe in 20 years when the children are looking after us. That would be a great format."

Trying to explain why the semi-improvised series was so popular, the Mock the Week regular put it down to the fact that it didn't shy away from depicting "how difficult it is to bring up kids and what an unholy mess it is, quite often.

"That stuff is confusing and confused. The number of people who have come up to me and said, 'You are basically telling me the story of my own life.'

"But I would like to say that I'm a much better father than I appear to be on Outnumbered."

Throughout its nine-year run, Outnumbered was nominated for three BAFTAs and seven British Comedy Awards, bagging two of the latter. In 2009, Marquez, who was just 7 at the time, won for Best Female Comedy Newcomer.

Outnumbered is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
