Parkinson’s UK in Bromley has said the nearly 700 people living with the disease in the borough “could be left without support” unless new people volunteer.

The UK’s leading Parkinson’s charity runs events across the area including exercise classes and voice therapy sessions which help those diagnosed with the condition to cope with their symptoms.

The Bromley branch is urgently appealing for new volunteers so they can continue their work helping members of the community suffering with Parkinson’s, as well as supporting their loved ones and carers.

Karina Prithwani, the network support officer at Parkinson’s UK, said: “The Bromley & District Branch provides a lifeline for people in the local area who are living with Parkinson’s, but unless new volunteers step forward people could be left without the support they need.

“If you can spare just a few hours a week, we’d love to welcome you to volunteer alongside the amazing people who are already part of Bromley & District Branch - because with your support we really can change lives.”

Around 145,000 people in the UK are currently diagnosed with Parkinson’s - a disease which occurs when the brain cells that make dopamine start to die.

There are more than 40 symptoms, including pain and anxiety, and whilst some symptoms can be treated there is currently no cure for the disease.

Parkinson’s UK’s mission is to find a cure through research and campaigning whilst also helping people to manage their symptoms.

All 365 Parkinson’s UK local groups are run by volunteers who are trained and supported by Parkinson’s UK staff.

The Bromley branch are in urgent need of a Branch Treasurer to help those with Parkinson’s access activities and sessions which make a huge difference to their symptoms.

The branch needs someone to engage and interact with members of the community and deal with the finances of the group so that as many people as possible in Bromley can be helped.

The Bromley and District group meet on the second Saturday of every month from 2pm until 4pm at St. Georges Church Hall on Bickley Park Road in Bromley.
