Petrol stash fears amid armed police stand-off in Northolt

A man who has barricaded himself inside a house for three days may have a stockpile of petrol, police fear.

Armed officers have been at the scene in Northolt, northwest London, since the early hours of Friday and about 80 of the man's neighbours have been evacuated.

The alert was raised over concerns the man had "hazardous items" at the house in Wood End Lane.

Police said on Sunday that these could include petrol and other "combustible material".

An area with a radius of 200m has been sealed off as police continue try to negotiate with the man.

A Metropolitan Police statement said: "Whilst it is not known exactly what the man has inside the property police are treating seriously reports that the items appeared hazardous and dangerous, as they are said to include quantities of petrol and combustible material."

The man, who is believed to be alone, has not yet spoken to police.

Officers say he may have mental health issues which could be made worse by police action or could make his behaviour unpredictable.

There is no suggestion of any connection to terrorism and nor is there any link to other operations or investigations, they added.

Chief Superintendent Paul Martin thanked residents for their patience, adding: "Our aim is to bring this to a safe conclusion for everyone.

"I know that our operation has been ongoing for some time now and that it is causing disruption and inconvenience to local residents and the community of Northolt.

"I can understand why people may be feeling frustrated or concerned.

"Their local officers are out on duty today to speak to local people, keep them updated and understand any concerns that they may have.

"The operation will continue for as long as is necessary and I would like to stress that we are doing all we can - using all our tactics - to end this incident safely."
