South Wales Police make two arrests after 16-year-old girl stabbed to death

A major police incident was declared in a South Wales village after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death in what is believed to have been a domestic incident.

Armed police and ambulance crews flooded into the remote village of Ynyswen just after lunchtime following reports of numerous casualties at Chinese takeaway restaurant.

The area was placed in lockdown and South Wales Police said they were dealing with numerous casualties.

Much of the police activity was focused on the Blue Sky Chinese Takeaway restaurant in Baglan Street, with a large cordon surrounding it and several neighbouring properties.

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed that a 16-year-old girl had died and two men had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Both men were being treated in hospital for serious injuries, believed to be knife wounds.

The force confirmed it was not treating the incident as terrorist related and they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Superintendent Rich Jones, from South Wales Police, said: "This is clearly a very serious incident which has caused significant shock and concern for both the local and wider community.

"We have a dedicated team of detectives working hard to establish the exact circumstances that have led to the tragic death of this young girl.

"While the investigation is still in its early stages, we can confirm that those involved are understood to know each other and we are currently not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

"There will be significant police presence in Baglan Street over the weekend but we will reopen the road at the earliest opportunity.

"In the meantime, the support and understanding of the local community is very much appreciated."

John Belgrove, a builder, who lives on Baglan Street, said he was in his shed when his barking dogs alerted him to emergency services just after midday.

He said: "I came out and I counted over the next half an hour about 31 different emergency vehicles. I saw what looked like a Chinese lady, probably in her 20s, crying uncontrollably and she had blood on her front.

"There was one elderly Chinese man who was walking wounded with his head all bandaged up and they put him in the back of an ambulance."

Chris Bryant, the local MP, also expressed his sympathies with those affected by the tragic events, while Mark Drakeford, the First Minister of Wales said he was being kept up to date with developments.
