'What Meghan wants': Prince Harry accused of 'blowing up' his own family by Tory minister

A minister in Boris Johnson’s government has accused Prince Harry of “blowing up his family” following the revelations in Sunday’s Oprah Winfrey interview.

Zac Goldsmith said: “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.”

Goldsmith is a Conservative member of the House of Lords who also has an unpaid role in Johnson’s government as minister for the Pacific and the environment.

He was responding on Twitter to ITV News’ royal editor Chris Ship, who said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had “dropped bomb after heavy bomb on Buckingham Palace” during the interview.

Goldsmith responded: “Not ‘Buckingham Palace’ – Harry’s family. Harry is blowing up his family.

“‘What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.’”

The quote in the final sentence was said to have been uttered by Harry during an alleged outburst ahead of the couple’s 2018 wedding.

Goldsmith’s stance was different to that of the prime minister – the man who handed him a ministerial position last year shortly after he was given a peerage having lost his seat as MP for Richmond Park in the 2019 general election.

At Monday’s Downing Street press conference, Johnson repeatedly refused to comment on the interview, and specifically allegations of racism towards Meghan and her son, Archie.

Meghan – who is mixed-race – said that when she was pregnant with Archie, an unnamed member of the Royal Family raised “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born”.

She was asked whether there were concerns that her child would be “too brown” and that would be a problem. Meghan said: “If that is the assumption you are making, that is a pretty safe one.”

When quizzed about the matter, Johnson – who is said not to have watched the interview – would only say: "As for all other matters to do with the Royal Family, I have spent a long time now not commenting on Royal Family matters and I don't intend to depart from that today."
