Queen's funeral: Which shops and businesses will be closed?

McDonald's will close all its UK restaurants for the Queen's funeral, joining a host of big businesses who are shutting for the day on Monday.

The fast food giant announced on Twitter it will close all its UK branches on 19 September, "to allow everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

Morrisons joined other major supermarkets in confirming plans to close for the Queen's funeral as a mark of respect.

Earlier this week Marks & Spencer and Asda confirmed they will shut stores on Monday, 19 September for the funeral of Elizabeth II, alongside stories including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Lidl.

Aldi, Primark and John Lewis have confirmed they will close on 19 September, while several high street stories have also announced they will be closed for the day.

Cinema chains including Cineworld, Odeon and Showcase will join stores in being closed for the day.

The Queen's son, King Charles III, has confirmed that his mother's funeral will be a Bank Holiday in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Retailers are not required to shut their doors on the day of the funeral, and others may choose to open for reduced hours, as many regularly do on other bank holidays.

Government guidance says: "Some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral, however, this is at the discretion of individual businesses."

These are some of the supermarkets and high street shops who have confirmed they plan to close for the Queen's funeral:-

Morrisons

Morrisons said all its UK supermarkets will shut on the day of the funeral.

“All our supermarkets will be closed on Monday, 19 September as a mark of respect and so colleagues can pay tribute to Her Majesty,” a spokeswoman for the supermarket said.

Petrol filling stations will reopen at 5pm, the spokeswoman added.

The Co-op

Shirine Khoury-Haq, Co-op chief executive, said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

“As a mark of respect and to give our colleagues, customers and members time to reflect and mourn, we will be closing our stores on Monday September 19.”

Iceland

Iceland will close all of its more than 1,000 stores on Monday.

A spokesman said: "As a mark of respect to Her Majesty The Queen and to allow its colleagues to mourn in their own way, Iceland has made the decision to close all of its stores."

Marks & Spencer

Stuart Machin, chief executive at M&S, said: "All of us at M&S – and indeed across the country and beyond – feel a real and deep sense of loss and sadness at the passing of Her Majesty, as well as huge respect for the grace with which His Majesty King Charles III and the wider royal family have led the nation in our mourning.

"It is right that we make changes to our operational arrangements on the day of the funeral to ensure our colleagues across our stores and distribution network can participate, whilst supporting customers as they show their respects too.”

He added there will be "limited exceptions in London and Windsor", where M&S will serve customers paying their respects to the Queen, but those stores would be closed during the funeral itself.

Franchise stores at travel locations and in public service sites such as hospitals are expected to remain open on Monday.

Asda

Asda said it will shut all of its stores until 5pm on the day to allow employees to watch the funeral.

An Asda spokesman said: "As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, all Asda stores will be closed on Monday September 19 until 5pm to allow our customers and colleagues to recognise the passing of our late monarch and commemorate her steadfast service to our nation.

"We will not be offering online deliveries on Monday September 19.

"All our stores will close by midnight on Sunday September 18 and reopen at 5pm on Monday September 19.

"Those colleagues contracted to work while the stores are closed will receive their normal pay.

"Any colleagues who work when the stores reopen will be paid double time for the rest of the day."

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s said it will shut its main supermarkets and Argos shops on the day of the funeral, but said they will keep convenience shops and petrol filling stations open in the evening.

A spokeswoman for the retailers said: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, September 19.

“This includes Groceries Online and Argos Fast Track delivery.

"Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person.

"We thank our customers for their understanding."

Tesco

Tesco is closing all of its large stores all day on 19 September and has also cancelled home deliveries due for Monday.

A small number of its Express stores in central London and Windsor will remain open all day for people attending the commemorations, and others will open from 5pm.

Aldi

Aldi also confirmed it will close all its stores for the day.

On Twitter, the company said: “As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores across the UK will close on Monday September 19 to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen.”

Lidl

On Facebook, Lidl said: "In honour of Her Majesty and to allow our colleagues to pay their respects, we will be closing all of our stores across England, Scotland and Wales on the day of the funeral. Thank you to everyone for your understanding."

Waitrose

Waitrose's parent business The John Lewis Partnership said it will shut the supermarkets, along with its John Lewis department stores, all day for the funeral as a mark of respect.

Andrew Murphy, chief operating officer of The John Lewis Partnership, said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

“We will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral as a mark of respect, and because we believe this is the right thing to do for our partners and customers.”

It added there may be “a very limited number of Waitrose stores” near to the route of the funeral procession which remain open to serve members of the public nearby.

It stressed these shops would close during the funeral itself.

Primark

Primark confirmed it will shut all its 191 high street stores next Monday, with its stores reopening for normal hours the following day.

A spokeswoman said: "Our stores, depots and head office in the UK will be closed on Monday September 19 to give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"We will reopen as normal on Tuesday September 20."

Poundland

Poundland said all its 770 UK stores will close for the whole day, and staff scheduled to work on September 19 will receive their pay in full.

“We know how important it will be that colleagues have the opportunity to pay their respects next Monday, as the country comes together to honour and celebrate the life of the Queen,” Poundland said.

B&Q

A B&Q spokesperson said: "As a mark of respect for the state funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to offer our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects, we have taken the decision to close all our UK stores on Monday 19 September. Our click and collect and home delivery services will also be temporarily suspended on the day.”

Currys

UK stores will be closed for the day, while the retailer also confirmed that no deliveries will be made to customers.

Alex Baldock, chief executive of Currys said: "I will be joining our colleagues and the millions of people around the world in saying a final thank you to her.”

Toolstation

The DIY retailer will close its 556 branches across the UK on Monday.

A spokesman said: "As a mark of respect for the life of service and leadership of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Toolstation has decided that its stores in the United Kingdom will close all day on Monday, 19 September to coincide with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's State Funeral and mark the last day of the period of national mourning."

Stores will re-open for business on Tuesday, 20 September.

Costa Coffee

Costa Coffee said all "wholly owned" stores will close next Monday, while some – including those in hospitals – will remain open.

Other stores

Many other stores and retailers are shutting up shop for the day, with business open as usual from Tuesday, 20 September.
