A TOURISM and leisure committee in Rossendale are applying the final touches to their ‘huge’ upcoming jubilee celebrations, with a special Freddie Mercury tribute performance the highlight.

Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, along with The Ashcroft, are planning to celebrate the Monarch’s long service in style with a free, fun filled family event on Saturday, June 4.

The 'Queen for the Queen' event will begin at noon in The Ashcroft carpark and the line-up includes Idol Frets, The Mash Up Men, Between the Vines and a Freddie Mercury tribute act finale.

Until 4pm, the car park of The Ashcroft will be cordoned off. Lancashire Hospitality Co-Operation will be providing hot food in their Bombay Brew Kebab Truck and The Ashcroft bar will be open for liquid refreshments.

There will also be an arts and crafts fair indoors, featuring a variety of artisan stalls in The Ashcroft main hall.

There will also be children’s activities and crafts.

In the lead up to the festivities, residents are being asked to design and display a jubilee flag.

People can send a picture of their flag to team@the-ashcroft.co.uk before May 27 to be entered into a competition, with the winner being announced on the day.

Whitworth Town Council are also planning to light a beacon on top of Brown Wardle hill to mark the occasion.

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm on June 2. Residents are encouraged to look up towards the hill to see the beacon from the town.
