Rangers and Frankfurt fans clash in ugly scenes ahead of Europa League final in Seville

Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt fans clashed in ugly scenes ahead of the Europa League final in Seville with the German side eventually lifting the trophy after penalties.

On a boiling hot night in the Spanish city, fans were seen fighting and throwing chairs on the streets just hours before kick-off.

Tables and chairs were launched towards both sets of supporters while a brawl appeared to break out in the middle of a road crossing after a large group of Frankfurt fans moved away up the road.

Meanwhile, what appears to be a Rangers fan falls to the ground amid another rucas, only moving after receiving attention from another individual, while another footage from a bar showed blood on the floor.

The trouble comes after Spanish police confirmed the arrests of five Germans late on Tuesday night after altercations in the city. Footage from the incident showed flares being thrown at Rangers fans, with riot cops forced to intervene.

Police expected up to 100,000 Rangers supporters to travel to Seville for the Europa League final, as their team chase a second European trophy in 50 years.

Around 50,000 Frankfurt fans were also expected to travel with the vast majority of both sets of travelling supporters not having tickets.

Wednesday's match represented Rangers' first European final since 2008 in Manchester, where they lost 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg in a game marred by crowd trouble with 39 people arrested and riot police called in. Ahead of the clash with Frankfurt, a number of Rangers club icons such as Graeme Souness and Ally McCoist had appealed for calm among fans travelling to Seville.

Frankfurt's road to the final has also been hit by problems among supporters with German fans clashing with West Ham fans in Seville when the former were playing Real Betis and the latter Sevilla in March.
