Red Dwarf: The Promised Land spoilers follow.

Red Dwarf returned to the small screen tonight (April 9) for its feature-length episode 'The Promised Land', and fans thought it was pretty smegging good.

In the 90-minute special, which aired on Dave, the team encountered a trio of cat clerics who worshipped Lister (Craig Charles) as some sort of god.

The cats, played expertly by Tom Bennett, Mandeep Dhillon and Lucy Pearman, were on the run from a feral cat leader named Rodon, who was seeking to kill any feline humanoid who worshipped anyone other than him.

In addition to Charles's Lister, the special also saw the return of original cast members Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Danny John-Jules (Cat) and Robert Llewellyn (Kryten).

Following its epic conclusion – in which a hyper-charged Rimmer used his power of light to project a small red dot on Rodon's chest, prompting his feline followers to tear him apart – fans soon took to Twitter to drench the special with praise, with many suggesting it's right up there with some of the series' best ever episodes.

"A fantastic Red Dwarf, funny and emotional. Please, please make some more!" tweeted one viewer, while another wrote: "I don't want it to end!!"

"OH MA GAWD! #RedDwarf tonight.... I was in TEARS of laughter, what a GREAT show! Thank you guys for that wonderful bit of entertainment in times like this," added another thoroughly-satisfied fan.
