The Resident spoilers for season 5, episode 3 'The Long and Winding Road'.

The Resident delivered a devastating moment for fans in its latest episode with the exit of Emily VanCamp's Nic Nevin.

While it has been known for a little while that the Marvel star would be leaving the series, the circumstances of her character's departure were nonetheless shocking.

After her involvement in a car crash last week, Nic sadly passed away last night (October 5) due to the extent of her injuries, leaving Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) a widower.

Speaking to TVLine following VanCamp's exit, co-showrunner Peter Elkoff explained that the actress' real-life pregnancy caused some logistical complexities on-screen.

"We knew that her life was changing, and priorities were changing, and we worked with her to figure out the best way to do this," he said.

The show boss went on to address fan hopes that Nic would have been able to survive via a transfer to another hospital or could have stayed off screen somehow, admitting it "didn't make sense" and that their only option was to kill her off.

"She was a devoted mother and a devoted nurse, Conrad’s wife, she had this incredible history at Chastain," he continued. "Why would she a) leave the hospital, b) leave Conrad, c) leave her daughter? None of it made any logical sense for us.

"Also, doing what we did is the thing that packs an emotional punch. Conrad as a divorced dad, a part-time dad? That's just sad. Conrad as a single father, raising a daughter, is heartbreaking but also wonderful to watch, you know?

"It felt to us like we had to do the thing that was true to the character that Emily created and Amy created in the writing, and tell a story that had the maximum amount of emotion and really put Conrad through the wringer. It gave him an opportunity to challenge himself – challenge the actor, Matt, and also the character as a single father."

In a separate interview with Deadline, VanCamp said that the birth of her first child was a major factor in her decision to leave, and admitted she would "never say never" to a comeback in flashback sequences.

"It's such a bittersweet moment for me," she reflected. "I loved doing The Resident so much for the four years I was on it. Oftentimes you hear about someone exiting a show because something bad had happened or there was some bad blood.

"But in this case, it's the exact opposite. There's nothing but love and respect between all of us and this decision was not an easy one for anybody. But it was the right one for me, personally. I'm grateful that I was met with understanding and compassion."

The Resident season 5 airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX in the US. In the UK, season 5 is airing on Fridays at 9pm on Sky Witness, and you can catch up on seasons 1-3 via Disney+.
