The Resident spoilers follow.

Marvel star Emily VanCamp exited Fox series The Resident during last night's episode (October 5) with her character Nic Nevin sadly passing away from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Speaking to The Wrap after her character's exit aired, Emily revealed that the plans for how Nic would leave the show had to change.

When asked if there was ever discussion about Nic being awake or speaking during scenes in the episode, Emily said: "There were definitely conversations.

"I was supposed to go back for a couple of episodes, but just because of personal reasons, I wasn't able to, which was a huge shame because I wanted to. And that was the plan all along. So the timing of everything was quite unfortunate.

"But I'm really so amazed at what they were able to do and grateful that they were able to pull it off as well. So yes, those conversations happened and of course I would have loved to go back, but life happens."

Emily and her husband Josh Bowman welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Iris, in August.

Co-showrunner Peter Elkoff previously said that Emily's pregnancy caused some logistical complexities on-screen.

Emily also admitted that she'd love to return to the show one day because she misses the cast so much.

"There's just so much love between all of us," she said. "I would be absolutely open to going back in some form or another. But it really depends on what we expect for the show and for them.

"But I'd always love to go back and see everyone. I miss them terribly."

The Resident season 5 airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX in the US. In the UK, season 5 is airing on Fridays at 9pm on Sky Witness, and you can catch up on seasons 1-3 via Disney+.
