The stars of gritty new hospital drama The Resident say they were shocked by the real-life stories which inspired the show.

Captain America’s Emily VanCamp and Matt Czuchry, star of The Good Wife and Gilmore Girls, appear in the 11-episode series, which is broadcast in the UK for the first time tonight on the Universal Channel.

The show, set in Atlanta, portrays stories based on real-life cases, including a cancer specialist who swindles patients.

The stars said they hoped it would make Americans think about the consequences of corporate-style healthcare.

VanCamp, 31, who is Canadian and grew up with an NHS-style system, said: “For me it was very, very shocking, but I think even the Americans on our show were shocked to learn about a lot of the things we had to tackle before we even shot the pilot.

“It’s terrifying when decisions are being made with money on the brain rather than a person’s wellbeing. It becomes a different story, and those are the stories we are trying to tell.”

The show has been criticised by doctors in the US angered by its portrayal of their profession.
