If Chris Rock coming up with a reboot of the Saw franchise wasn't already enough of a surprise, the comedian's take on the gory horror has now cast none other than Samuel L Jackson.

Rock, who will also be starring in the movie, will play a police detective investigating a series of violent crimes, and Jackson will be playing his father.

They'll be joined by The Handmaid's Tale star Max Minghella, who will be Rock's partner. Riverdale's Marisol Nichols will play a police captain.

Announcing the cast members, Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said: "We think Samuel L Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt."

The film was announced back in May, when Drake explained: "When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all in.

"Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise."

Saw will be released on October 23, 2020.
