Severance star Adam Scott has revealed that the show mirrored aspects of his own life.
Scott plays Mark S on the Apple TV+ series, which sees his character have his personal and professional memories separated via a program.
The narrative is started by Mark grieving over the death of his wife, Gemma, which Scott noted as being similar to his own personal situation.

“Mark is grieving his wife and I was grieving my mom, who died a few months before filming,” he revealed in an interview with The Guardian. “I thought I’d gone through the grieving process, but then I suddenly found myself without my family to cushion the blow.
“I was either eating and sleeping alone or I was working under the fluorescent lights at Lumon. So that sense of isolation really paralleled my own life. It was a real thing I was feeling and the right place – maybe the only place – to put it was into the show,” he continued.
The actor, who also starred as Ben Wyatt in Parks and Recreation, elaborated further by explaining the show’s themes of isolation and grief were tethered to the COVID-19 restrictions during filming.

“We started shooting in the midst of lockdown and the pre-vaccine pandemic,” he said. “I plopped down in New York, leaving my wife and kids in Los Angeles, and because of the intense quarantine laws it was impossible to go back and forth. So for three or four months I could only see them on FaceTime.”
The series, which saw six of its nine episodes directed by Ben Stiller, was renewed for a second season in April, with filming beginning in late October.
Upon the announcement of further episodes, Stiller said (via Variety): “It has been a long road bringing Severance to television. I first read [creator Dan Erickson's] pilot over five years ago. It has always been a multi-season story and I'm really happy we get to continue it. I'm grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way.”
Severance is streaming now on Apple TV+.
