Shadowhunters fans may not be ready to say goodbye to the show just yet (and the fight to save the series is still on), but the beginning of the end is now in sight as the show has dropped a first look at its final run of episodes.

Picking up from season three's midseason finale – which left Clary's (Katherine McNamara) fate up in the air following a battle with Lilith, a resurrection ritual and an explosion – the first picture from episode 11 sees Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) doing everything they can to find answers.

"They refuse to believe that Clary is gone forever," Shadowhunters showrunner Todd Slavkin told Entertainment Weekly. "As a father figure, Luke is really driving that search."

While we already know that Kat McNamara will be back for the new episodes, Slavkin has now also teased that the Clary we see in the upcoming season may not be one we're familiar with.

"Her experience when she was away will forever change her," he added. "It will take a lot to go back to how Clary used to be."

The show's final season will see Luke Baines taking over from Will Tudor in the role of Clary's brother Jonathan Morgenstern, the main villain in the series' final stretch of episodes, and Slavkin continued to tell EW that the remaining episodes will be the show's most adult and most sophisticated yet.

But, while the series looks to be heading full speed ahead for its two-hour finale, co-showrunner Darren Swimmer added that although fans will get closure, the series' ending may still be quite open-ended.

"We didn’t want to do anything that wouldn’t allow the world to continue in people’s imaginations," Swimmer explained.

The show airs on Freeform in the US, with episodes following a day later on Netflix in the UK.
