Simu Liu teases Margot Robbie's Barbie movie as 'vibrant and full of life'

Simu Liu is going from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Barbie Dream House.

The Chinese Canadian actor may be best known for playing the buff hero of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but his next role features decidedly less punching — and way more pink. Liu stars in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie film, which features Margot Robbie as the blonde plastic icon and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend, Ken.

When EW spoke to Liu recently about his new memoir, When We Were Dreamers, he was in the middle of shooting Barbie. And although he was tight-lipped on plot details, Liu said that he and his costars have been having a blast on the neon pink set, adding, "It feels like we're just hanging out and having fun and dancing."

"The aesthetic of the movie is just so vibrant and full of life," Liu teases. "Imagine showing up to that set every day with a bunch of friends, like, 'Great, cue the music!' We're dancing, and then you come out of a 12-hour day, and you're like, 'Did I really go to work today? Or did I just hang out with my friends?'"

In addition to Liu, Robbie, and Gosling, Barbie boasts a star-studded cast that also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Emerald Fennell, and more. Gerwig, best known for directing Lady Bird and Little Women, co-wrote the screenplay with partner Noah Baumbach, and Liu teases that their script is full of surprises.

"Greta's such a special filmmaker, and it's no secret that we've assembled one of the coolest casts out there," Liu says. "I can't wait to see it all come together and for the world to see. Because I know there's a lot of question marks! Everyone's like, 'What is this Barbie movie?' When people say 'Barbie movie,' they feel like they know what it's going to be like. But with every casting announcement and the announcement of Greta Gerwig, I think we've been raising a lot of eyebrows. But without giving away anything about the script, I'll just say that it's one of the best things I've ever read."

Barbie is scheduled to hit theaters July 21, 2023.
