OK, so we understand that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (usually), but we're not entirely sure that it applies to the news that iconic band The Smiths are reuniting.

While we're sure die-hard fans of the '80s indie group will be thrilled to hear of their comeback, the distinct lack of Morrissey and Johnny Marr reminds us all too much of GEM.

And we all know how that ended up.

On the plus side for Smiths fans, bassist Andy Rourke, drummer Mike Joyce and guitarist Craig Gannon aren't gunning for a mainstream comeback, but are instead taking part in a brand new live show called Classically Smiths.

Classically Smiths, which is set to kick off in Edinburgh, will bring back the heady days of the Madchester scene with the help of the Manchester Camerata Orchestra.

According to STV, the special series of concerts will take place in Edinburgh, London and, of course, Manchester later this summer.

Drummer Joyce promised fans that the trio performing their biggest hits alongside the live orchestra will take The Smiths' legendary back-catalogue to "another level".

Guitarist Gannon sounded equally optimistic, promising that the shows will be a "refreshing and exciting production, not only for us as musicians, but ultimately for the people coming to see and hear it".

Y'know what? Maybe we're not so miserable about Morrissey and Johnny Marr giving it a miss after all.
