Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC has been renewed for a fourth season.

Disney-owned cable network FX confirmed the news on Monday (May 3) ahead of the season three finale next Tuesday, May 11. The broadcaster also announced that the new episodes are expected to air sometime in 2022.

"Elgin James, his creative collaborators, this incredible cast and crew delivered on another epic season of Mayans MC," Nick Grad, FX Entertainment's President of Original Programming, said in a statement.

"Through three seasons, Mayans has told stories that resonate well beyond the border where the club thrives and survives, inviting fans inside their world and giving them a seat at the table."

"I am deeply indebted to everyone at FX and 20th for allowing us to continue to tell the stories of the characters that Kurt and I created and whom our cast and crew took to new heights in season three," James added.

"In season four, we look forward to diving deeper into each character's truths, exploring the danger of the combustible world they inhabit, and for each writer, cast member and crew to stake out our place as storytellers."

James took over from former showrunner Kurt Sutter in season three, when the latter was dropped by FX for being, in his own words, "an abrasive dick".

In response to his firing, Sutter penned an open letter to "Team Mayans". In it, he apologised for making "people feel less than or unsupported" and explained that this was "not the way [he] wanted to end [his] 18-year relationship" with the broadcaster.

Mayans MC airs on FX in the US. It is available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
