Statistic of the year: More Americans are killed by lawnmowers than by jihadis

Donald Trump probably won’t be too happy with this year’s International Statistic of the Year – the fact that more Americans are killed by lawnmowers each year than by Jihadis.

Every year, an unfortunate 69 people fall prey to lawnmowers, while just two (on average) are killed by jihadi terrorists.

Unusually, Kim Kardashian was involved in bringing the statistic to light – after she Tweeted out a graphic of the stat earlier this year, as Trump railed against Islamic immigrants.

It first appeared in a Richard Todd article for the Huffington Post – which contrasted the number of Americans killed by jihadis with those killed by lightning.

It noted that 11,737 people every year die from being shot by another American.

Judging panel member Liberty Vittert said: ‘Everyone on the panel was particularly taken by this statistic and its insight into risk – a key concept in both statistics and everyday life.

‘When you consider that this figure was put into the public domain by Kim Kardashian, it becomes even more powerful because it shows anyone, statistician or not, can use statistics to illustrate an important point and illuminate the bigger picture.’
