A first look at the new adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand has been revealed, including pictures of main stars Alexander Skarsgård and Whoopi Goldberg.

The post-apocalyptic CBS All Access series follows the aftermath of a man-made virus going out of control and wiping out 99 per cent of the world's population.

Among those left are Skarsgård's Randall Flagg and Goldberg's Mother Abagail, who are both at odds over how humans should conduct themselves.

The first pictures (via Vanity Fair) show a slick-looking Flagg, contrasting with Abagail's older prophet.

The pictures also reveal Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor and Nat Wolff as Lloyd Henreid.

"He's so charming and he's so handsome, and so powerful – I mean genuinely powerful, able to perform these sort of miracles where he could levitate himself and he has these actual powers," co-showrunner Taylor Elmore said of Flagg.

"And yet he needs this adulation and this kind of worship from these people whom he's summoned to him. He needs to have them make a show all the time of how grateful they are to him."

"And there's something fundamentally weak about that," co-showrunner Benjamin Cavell added, noting similarities with the current state of the world. "Does it remind you of someone you know?"

Goldberg added of her "complicated" character: "She is very, very righteous and very good. But really flawed I feel."

The Stand also stars Henry Zaga as Nick Andros, Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Greg Kinnear as Glen Bateman and James Marsden as Stu Redman.

The Stand will air on CBS All Access.
