Suiting, emeralds and velvet: the trends that ruled the Golden Globes 2018 red carpet

Almost all the female attendees at last night's 75th annual Golden Globes ceremony opted to wear black in support of the Time's Up Initiative, with each injecting their own personal style through their choice of gown, jumpsuit or tuxedo and the way they accessorised.

From dramatic sequinned gowns to black feathers and lace, each woman put her own personal stamp on the colour.

These are the three major trends that emerged.

Suiting

It's no coincidence that on a night so centred on themes of equality and empowerment, so many female Golden Globes attendees should choose to wear trousers. Claire Foy donned one of the most impeccable and striking ensembles in a wide-legged Stella McCartney trouser suit while Christina Hendricks wore tailored trousers under her gown.

Lena Waithe looked slick in a satin black suit complete with black shirt and black bow tie while Susan Kalechi Watson opted for a beaded wide-leg jumpsuit with a deep-V neckline. Whether cigarette trousers, slacks or peek-a-boo capris worn under skirts, the women last night were most definitely wearing the trousers.

Emerald Jewellery

An advantage of a monotone red carpet is that the jewellery really shines. And this year's stone of choice was most definitely emerald. Laura Marano, Isabelle Hupert, Penelope Cruz and Ashley Judd all chose to frost themselves with the green gemstone.

Catherine Zeta-Jones sported $2.6 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz jewellery, including emerald and diamond chandelier earrings, a 20-carat emerald and diamond shield ring, and a 10-carat emerald cut diamond pinky ring. Debra Messing flashed 32 carats of pear-shape Colombian emeralds set in blackened platinum and a 40-carat Colombian emerald and diamond ring.

In addition to jewellery, several people chose to wear green and also purple makeup. Kelly Clarkson, Kaela Settle and Laura Marano all wore metallic green smokey eyes while Emma Stone sported a purple lip. Stone's makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, explained the reason stars chose accents of green and purple was because they are associated with the women's suffragette movement. Yet another of the evening's subliminal sartorial messages.

Velvet

One of the most popular fabrics of AW17 stole its way onto the red carpet. Dakota Johnson nailed the look with a Gucci velvet and black organza gown, featuring a crystal buckle and crystal embroideries throughout the train.

Meanwhile Oprah Winfrey wore a custom-made off-the-shoulder Atelier Versaec velvet gown and Mary J. Blige rocked it in a bespoke Alberta Ferretti number.
