Supergirl star Melissa Benoist says CW series has ‘changed my life for the better’ following cancellation announcement

The CW’s Supergirl is coming to an end after six seasons.

The series stars former Glee actor Melissa Benoist as Superman’s cousin who is one of the last surviving Kryptonians on Earth.

On Tuesday (22 September), it was announced that Supergirl would be returning for one final 20-episode season, which is due to premiere later this year.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Benoist wrote: “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.”

The actor explained that playing Supergirl, whose real name is Kara Danvers, had taught her strength that she “didn’t know I had” and that people are strongest when they work together.

“What she stands for pushes all of us to be better,” Benoist wrote. “She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

Supergirl first aired in 2015 and features a cast which includes Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan and David Hareword.

The show is part of The CW’s DC Arrowverse and shares a universe with shows including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman, many of which it has featured crossover episodes with.

A spin-off, titled Superman & Lewis, is scheduled to begin in 2021.
