Loving daughter, 15, allegedly murdered by brother at caravan park 'died of asphyxia'

A 15-year-old girl allegedly murdered by her brother at a caravan park in Wales died of asphyxia, an inquest has found.

Amanda Selby, from Ashton-Under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, died at Tŷ Mawr Holiday Park in Towyn, near Abergele, on Saturday, 31 July.

Her brother Matthew Selby, 19, appeared in court last week charged with her murder.

An inquest opened in Ruthin, Denbighshire, on Monday, and heard the provisional cause of her death was asphyxia as a result of neck compression and external airway obstruction and crush asphyxia.

The inquest was then adjourned to a date to be fixed, pending further investigation.

It heard that the teenager’s body was formally identified by her father, Anthony Selby.

Amanda had been on holiday with her family at the caravan park in North Wales.

Her brother appeared at Mold Crown Court via videolink from HMP Berwyn last Wednesday.

No pleas were entered and he has been remanded in custody ahead of a provisional trial date of 28 February, 2022.

The case is expected to last between five and seven days.

Selby, who spoke only to confirm his name, is due to appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 29 October.

In a tribute to Amanda, her family said: “Amanda was a loving daughter and granddaughter – she was caring, thoughtful, liked to help others and very much loved.

"She will be very sadly missed."

Her school Droylsden Academy also paid tribute.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with Amanda’s family at what is an incredibly difficult time,” it said.

"Our school family is devastated by this awful news.

"Amanda was a lovely student and she will be sorely missed by students and staff.

"Clearly, many members of our school community will be affected by this loss and we will be offering support to those who need it in the weeks and months ahead.”
