The Bill fans could barely contain their excitement amid rumours that the show is being rebooted with some of the old cast members.

The primetime cop drama wrapped in 2010 after 17 years.

But it has now been reported that two reboots could be on their way.

Last year it was reported that a potential revival was in the early stages of development, with stars Graham Cole (PC Tony Stamp), Trudie Goodwin (Sgt June Ackland), and Mark Wingett (DC Jim Carver) likely to be on board.

And now The Sun says UKTV is developing a new version of the series, quoting a source as saying it could "attract a whole new generation to the show”.

While there is no official word so far, fans of the police procedural are crossing their fingers.

"Please let this be true!" one person posted on Twitter.

They also asked The Bill star Cole: "Have you heard anything? It'd be absolutely amazing for some good drama like #thebill to return to our screens!!"

"I so hope this is true," said another.

"I loved The Bill, it was iconic and I was gutted when it was axed, so the show back with lots of drama and modern twists, turns and complex, unpredictable, fun characters would be amazing!"

"Ooo a spin off of #thebill is coming back… hope it’s the same #themetune," said another.

"Always meant bed time when I was a kid #lovedit."

Someone else tweeted: "Yes!! Loved loved loved this back in the day."

However, one predicted: "It won’t be as good as the original!"
